Facebook Surrenders to Users …

by Sachin Balagopalan on March 25, 2009 · 1 comment

If there is any doubt that Facebook is a young software company and has a lot to learn - especially when it comes to releasing new versions of it’s software - this latest debacle with the updated user interface reiterates that fact. Apparently they are now acquiescing to pressure from their most vocal users and are going to tweak the design to accommodate their demands.

Twitter CRM? Nah!

by Sachin Balagopalan on March 23, 2009 · 4 comments

Actually the buzzword should perhaps be “Social CRM” as Jeremiah Owyang accurately points out in his post. A couple of weeks ago I was trying to setup my new HP scanner/copier and I needed information on some drivers. Almost instinctively I went into Twitter (that’s right not Google :) ) and searched for the keyword “HP”. Lo and behold HP’s imaging and printing group had it’s own Twitter page (@HP_IPG) and I was surprised to see an overwhelming number of tweets addressing my topic. The fact is customer relationship is highly decentralized these days thanks in part to Web 2.0 and search engines (a.k.a. Googling!). As I was info-snacking on Saturday morning, I came across two posts that reiterated the state we’re in right now and what we should be doing about it. First was the NY Times headline screaming … Job Losses Hint at Vast Remaking of Economy… about February’s unemployment numbers, the highest it’s ever been in twenty five years at 8.1%.

Metallica’s Ulrich Finally Gets It!

by Sachin Balagopalan on March 5, 2009 · 1 comment

Even before the RIAA got into the business of policing and suing people for sharing music files, the heavy metal band Metallica had a successful run at it. Remember Napster, the file sharing service back in the year 2000? Metallica was instrumental in getting the courts to shut them down permanently. I remember that mumbling clown Lars Ulrich (the drummer for the band) whining like a little kid on TV back then about how people were stealing his music. Looks like the whole thing backfired on Lars and his mates because here we are almost a decade later and guess what? BitTorrent! There are more file sharing services out there right now and people have figured out clever and discrete ways to share files. Illegal sharing of music is now rampant as ever and apparently even Lars is into it now. According to TorrentFreak he admitted to downloading his own music using a file sharing client …
