ICQ and Pearly Whites!

Back in the day before the likes of MSN, AIM, GoogleTalk or Skype ICQ was the widely used instant messaging application. I remember subscribing to the service circa 1996/97 and being assigned a low seven digit number that identified me to my friends. Yes it was one of those ah ha moments back then when you could all of a sudden chat in real time with your buddies. “Real time” in those days of-course was subject to the network latency via your 28.8 or 56kb modem if you were at home. Most of us however used it frequently at work and IMO was the beginning of the decline in office productivity due to technology. :)
The app was developed by an Israeli software company and later on sold to AOL. Like many other twenty somethings at the time I was enamored and used it frequently to stay in touch with my buddies. I’m not sure if it was nostalgia that overcame me when I saw this post on Gizmodo but apparently the Israeli software company has partnered with a pharmacy to release a toothpaste called ICQ!

I guess the moral of the story is you ever start a company of your own make sure you at least come up with a catchy name for your product - just in case things don’t work out! ;)
