Looks like Apple is tapping into the popularity of social networking sites. Today Apple announced that it will be integrating its iTunes music download service with the popular social networking site Bebo. Bebo is the number one social networking site in the UK and Ireland and users from these countries will soon be able to buy music directly from any artist/group who has a Bebo profile.
Sounds like a great strategy to me, a win-win scenario for Apple as well as Bebo. Apple can increase its iTunes footprint by tapping new users as well as reaching existing iTunes customers by making it easy for them to purchase music while “socializing” on Bebo. Bebo claims to have 500,000 artists currently registered on the site, perhaps more will sign up now after hearing about the deal.
What would be really cool is if Bebo provides an “iTunes download widget” where members can place these widgets on their profiles linking them to their favorite song(s). So their friends can directly sample and download the songs without actually visiting the artists profile.
Looks like this might be one of the more popular ways to purchase music in the future if Apple as well as the other on line music stores integrate with not only Bebo but MySpace, Facebook and other SNS’s as well.
