Shut up and sing ?

Couple of nights ago the Dixie Chicks won the three biggest awards at the Grammy’s - song, record and album of the year. In case one just returned after a long hiatus from planet earth we’re all aware of those fateful comments uttered by Natalie Maines at a 2003 concert in London - “Just so you know, we’re ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas.”

I’m glad they won the song, record and album of the year - but not because they can now legitimately say “up yours” to the country music establishment for not playing their songs. I downloaded the album recently and have been listening to it on my ipod with my Bose QC3’s (yeah I own a pair and I love them :-) ) headphones. This album clearly marks the beginnings of their crossover journey to pop/rock/blues. Sure you can still hear the banjo and fiddle but Natalie’s voice has matured to stratospheric levels (she was awesome to begin with) and is now primed to belt out pretty much anything. I for one am looking forward to their future albums and in fact I think Natalie should do a solo project and truly explore and expose her range.

The truth is entertainers have long been using their celebrity to make political statements. The question is should we as paying consumers tolerate that and to what degree? I may agree with the Dixie Chicks about the Commander in Chief but do I want to hear that at a concert ?

Here is a message to Natalie Maines -

“I buy your music and go to your concerts because I like what you put out and by you making political statements that I may or may not agree with does not make a difference to me. I like you for only one thing and that is your talent to belt out the tunes. I recognize your gift and I’m willing to pay to listen and watch you. I will still continue to go to your concerts and download your music because I really don’t care about your politics but I do care about your music. So I’m begging you please just shut up and sing.”

Here is a duet that’s worth watching and listening to:
