Twittering All The Way To The Bank …

It’s not very often you find a company that does not have a clearly defined business plan and no steady revenue stream have such an impact on society than Twitter. The microblogging service which lets you send short and concise messages (140 words or less) to your followers is now - if I dare say so - mainstream and ubiquitous as email is was. Everyone from your family and friends to the mainstream media outlets to restaurants and big businesses are following on Twitter. While Twitter may not have figured out a viable revenue model yet, others have figured out ways to make money off Twitter. Which is why I couldn’t help notice this little blurb buried inside this article …

InternetNews: Less altruistically, some businesses have discovered that Twitter is an effective way of communicating with consumers. Dell (NASDAQ: DELL) says Twitter has produced $1 million in revenue over the past year and a half through sale alerts. People who sign up to follow Dell on Twitter receive messages when discounted products are available the company’s Home Outlet Store. They can click over to purchase the product or forward the information to others.

A million bucks is not a big deal for a company like Dell but it certainly proves the power of the medium. IMO Twitter will probably add a bunch of cool features and end up offering a premium service - on top of the free service - and I’m pretty sure people will pay.

I think what we should start realizing at this point is they clearly do have a business plan i.e create a huge customer base by providing a free service and monetize later after you’ve got everyone hooked on it. I’m pretty sure this is exactly the place Twitter wants to be in where companies like Dell recognize the potential and will no doubt pay for premium services.

BTW you can follow this blog on Twitter - shameless plug :) .
