OK, literally hours after the news break that eBay is acquiring StumbleUpon, Google announced on their blog that they are releasing a recommendations button on the Google Toolbar that will serendipitously take you to a website that you might find interesting. Unlike SU it is not driven by the user community i.e. based on votes by other SU users who have similar interests, rather it is based on your past search history.
I installed the new button - a pair of dice icon - and I clicked it a handful of times and I must say it did take me to websites that I found interesting. Is this the beginning of a new trend in query-less browsing or is it just Google’s way of getting back at eBay for reportedly losing the deal with StumbleUpon? Somehow I can safely bet that the latter holds true in this case. ![]()
Now I’m going to spend the next few minutes clicking the dice button to see if it’ll take me to StumbleUpon or eBay. ![]()
